By submitting an application for the protection of the designation of origin to the European Commission by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, provisional, national protection for the Istrian White Truffle / Tartufo bianco d’Istria designation of origin has entered into force! This concludes a multi-year process of preparing the necessary documentation. From the date of application, the European Commission has a two-year period to approve (request additional information or reject) the protection at the European Union level. In other words, the conditions for using the provisional designation must be respected throughout the entire territory of the European Union, even though it is currently only a national, Croatian protection.
The “Istra” Truffle Association is extremely grateful to all truffle hunters and local stakeholders who, in any way, helped achieve this significant step for the further valorization of Istria’s natural and cultural heritage, and for the additional promotion of the region and the positioning of the Istrian White Truffle on the global gastronomic map. A big thank you also to those without whose help, support, and guidance this would not have been possible: the Istrian County, the Administrative Department for Agriculture, and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Croatia, Directorate for Livestock and Food Quality!
On these websites, we will regularly publish all information about the protection (how to obtain the right to use the protected designation), and we will additionally promote all entities (truffle hunters, restaurateurs, …) that join this system of name protection and promotion of the Istrian White Truffle.
