Buzet was declared the City of Truffles in 1999, and that same year an initiative was launched to protect the old riverbed of the Mirna River, which involved extensive cooperation with neighboring municipalities, specifically the Municipality of Oprtalj. It is now gratifying to hear that a new project is being launched, said Nada Prodan Mraković, County Head of Tourism, at the second panel “Valorization of Truffles and Designation of Origin.”
She was joined by Anton Brenko, project leader for the protection of the origin of Istrian white truffle from the Croatian Forestry Institute, Center for Multipurpose Forest Functions “Josip Ressel” in Pazin, and Marko Puh from Natura tartufi, the Pietro&Pietro brand, whose business is based on Istrian white truffle.
Last year, the Truffle Association “Istra,” with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Istria County, initiated the process of protecting the protected geographical indication of Istrian white truffle, Tuber magnatum pico.
“In July of this year, we sent the relevant ministry the first working version of the specification. A month ago, we received comments on the specification that encouraged us, as they concerned only minor amendments. We hope that by the end of the year we will have the second version of the product specification ready and that it will be sufficient for the relevant ministry to initiate the protection procedure at the national level,” said Brenko.
